One of our missions at Funshine Preschool is to teach our children the importance of giving back and helping the community. A few ways we have done this in the past is:

  • The PreK class brings in mittens and gloves for the APC clothing Bank.
  • We hold food drives 4 times a year for the local food assistance center: AFAC.
  • The kids give their extra halloween candy to Operation Gratitude.
  • Our teachers knit scarves for Doorways (a Domestic Abuse Shelter), the soldiers via Operation Gratitude, and a local church in DC.
  • We collect clothes and toiletries for the homeless shelter, Miraims kitchen.
  • We host a trike-a-thon for St. Jude's Children's hospital every spring.
  • Total money raised over the years is over $10,000!
  • Fall 2016 - we collected halloween candy to send to Operation Gratitude.

Funshine’s Garden 2019
One of Funshine’s favorite traditions is our garden! Each

year we grow a variety of herbs and vegetables and donate them to

AFAC (Arlington Food Assistance Coalition). While the one and two

year olds sharea plot, the three and four year olds are each responsible

for their own one foot by one foot plot. This combines into square foot

gardening which yields quite a hefty bounty for the hungry! Through

the fun of digging in the dirt the children learn about plants, nurturing

living things, the outcome of work and care and the satisfaction of

harvesting and sharing.

Little Sharing Library 2019
Funshine began it’s “Little Free Library” this spring and the reception

could not be more enthusiastic! Children immediately began donating

stories they love and books they had grown out of to share with their

friends. Daily drop-offs and pick-ups linger as eager hands lead their

parents to the library for an impromptu story time. Funshine has

always put reading at the epicenter of learning from the infant

room through the beginning readers through kindergarten.

We are spending summer 2017 working on a project called "Square Foot Gardening." Each child has a square foot to plant, water and manage on there own. We are growing okra, beans, mint, and cucumbers to donate to Arlington Food Assistance Center.

We also have a Butterfly Garden called "Carmen's Garden". Carmen Romero mentored Paige and Beth through the process of finding renovating, funding and moving into our new building and finding a temporary place after the fire.
